LEWISTON — The Lewiston and Auburn Memorial Day parade and ceremoney will be held on Saturday, May 26, and organizations that would like to participate are encouraged to.
The parade will start off from Kennedy Park and will proceed to Auburn, then back, ending at Veterans Memorial Park on the corner of Main and Lincoln streets.
It is due to begin at 9:30 a.m. and the ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park will begin around 10:30 a.m. The Lewiston and Auburn Veterans Council, which is sponsoring the parade, invites the public to participate, including veteran posts that aren’t members of the L-A Council. Other civic organizations, law enforcement agencies, Scouts and others are also invited. The post-parade ceremony will include the national anthem, a religious reading, speeches by mayors of both cities and music by Nel Meservier and others.
The ceremony will end with a memorial service and placing the wreath on the monument by the Gold Star Mothers, three cannon shots by VFW Post 1603, taps by Norm Bussiere and a reading of names of members who have passed away during the past year by veterans post chaplains.
It will concluded with the unveiling of the 30th stone, which has 216 names, and the emblem of the Gold Star Mothers.
Members of the council will also have binders with the names of the stones, and will help individuals find specific stones after the ceremony.
