LEWISTON — Virtuoso Italian pianist Roberto Plano will make his Maine debut 7 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the Gendron Franco Center, 46 Cedar St.
Plano will play works by Liszt, Piazzolla, Villa-Lobos, Ginastera, and Gershwin.
Only 22 when he won first prize at the 2001 Cleveland International Piano Competition, Roberto Plano went on to garner major prizes in other important competitions.
Plano began to play music when he was three. Along with classical compositions, the rock and soul music of stars such as Phil Collins, Elton John, and The Blues Brothers figured among his favorites, and he and his brother organized their own band, “Wings of Angels.”
Early on, he gained a reputation as a sensitive interpreter of works of the Classical and Romantic periods.
Plano’s extensive discography — more than 20 albums — includes CD’s for labels such as Amadeus, Arktos and Tau Records. In 2016, Plano moved with his wife and three daughters from Italy to Massachusetts, where he joined the faculty at Boston University’s College of Fine Arts.
A social hour will begin when the doors open at 6 p.m. The venue is handicapped accessible. All proceeds will benefit the Franco Center.
