TURNER — Local Army veteran retired Maj. John A. Pape has launched a campaign to bring the community together in showing support for our veterans with a green light campaign. Pape, of Turner, deployed with the U.S. Army in 2006-2007.
He said, “We owe our freedoms to the veterans of all our U.S. services, and with military veteran suicides at 20 to 22 veterans a day, we can help veterans by showing our collective support.” He wants to see a green light bulb on as many front porches as possible. He has pledged to give out 1,000 green light bulbs throughout Turner, Leeds and South Livermore, those areas that surround his own home, and encourages others to purchase their own green light bulbs.
He continued, “I am thrilled to drive down our local roads at night and see those families that are showing our veterans much appreciated support in this easy manner. A simple green light is universally recognized as showing support.”
Several local businesses and civic organizations have partnered with Pape, who makes his living as a local electrical contractor at JAPELCO Electrical Contractors in Turner. He is currently the first vice commander of American Legion William J. Rogers Post 153, and a member of Auburn VFW Captain Frank W. Hulett Post 1603. He plans to go door to door in the spring and summer to make a personal plea to each home to take a green light bulb and display it with pride each night.
