AUBURN — The Mary Dillingham-Burnt Meadow Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will host Nancy LeCompte, Maine author and authority on Maine’s Native Americans at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14.
LeCompte will explore the fact and fiction surrounding Molly Ockett at the event, which will be held in the Conference Room at the library, 49 Spring St.
Ockett lived from 1740 to 1816 and served as a doctor and midwife to many of the region’s early settlers. She is also the victim of a few culturally insensitive legends and the bigotry of reporters in bygone years. LeCompte will talk about her time and place in history, exploring the culture of her people and listening to first-hand accounts of her life.
The DAR meeting is open to the public, especially anyone interested in joining the DAR. Prospective members must be female, over 18 years of age, and be able to prove a blood line to a Revolutionary War Patriot or someone who gave aid to the cause of American Independence.
Guests are urged to bring a bag lunch, and members should remember to bring items for the DAR garage sale at the state conference as well as items for the conference basket.
