AUGUSTA — The Maine Genealogical Society will hold a writing workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the Elks Lodge, 397 Civic Center Drive.
The workshop will focus on helping genealogists take the information they have gathered through their research and lead them to and through the writing and publishing process.
Joseph C. Anderson, editor of “The Maine Genealogist,” will cover the steps required “to turn your yellowing, dusty files into the printed word.” The morning session will delve into a range of topics, including:
● Defining the writing project.
● Assembling your research notes.
● Using writing as a research tool.
● Compiling a resource and style sheet.
● Maximizing the capabilities of your word processor.
● Exploring ways to make your writing come alive.
● Making your work look good.
● Choosing a publisher to fit your project and budget.
The afternoon session will focus on how to write for a genealogical periodical and include a presentation by MGS’s membership secretary Deb Nowers on how family heirlooms inspired her to write about her ancestors.
Along the way, participants will learn many of the tricks and tools professional writers use to make the writing process simpler. Wrapping up, there will be a session covering illustrations, indexes and bibliographies, copyright considerations and the printing process. Though geared towards “Writing Your Family Story,” it is not for genealogists only. Telling one’s story is a popular theme; how we tell it can take many forms. To register, visit maineroots.org.
