TURNER — Turner Public Library is expanding its traditional celebration of Irish and Celtic culture this March with events for all ages.
In the first of three events, Una and Anthony Shostak will continue their tradition of introduce young patrons to Irish stories and music at the library’s monthly story hour 10 a.m. Saturday, March 10.
Una will play fiddle and be accompanied by her father on uilleann pipes and bodhran drum. Uillean pipes are Irish bagpipes and date back to the 18th century. The name uilleann comes from the Irish word “elbow,” a reference to how the instrument is played. In previous years, children have enjoyed opportunities to dance and also interact with the instruments. All ages are welcome to attend this popular event.
On Saturday, March 17, harpist Danielle Paus will perform a free concert beginning at 3 p.m.
Paus is a classically-trained musician and has appeared on stages throughout the US and abroad. Danielle is a respected and sought-after teacher and a member of the applied music faculty at Colby College, a teaching artist at 317 Community Music Center in Yarmouth, as well as owning a busy private studio in Bath.
South Portland musicians Tom Rota and Alden Robinson will perform a lively concert of music with uilleann pipes and fiddle at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 31.
Popular on the Portland small venue scene, Rota and Robinson are well-known for their entertaining musical sessions with an Irish flare.
The events are open to the public.
