AUBURN — The Auburn Public Library, 49 Spring St., has planned a variety of programs for teens in the coming weeks, including practical advice on job searching and and other current themes, as well as fun activities like gaming and anime.
Scheduled workshops and activities include:
* Maine Job Corps for teens and new adults (ages 16-24) — Contact Cathie Gavett of the Maine Job Corps at 207-458-5369 to find out more about this program and who is eligible. She will then arrange a mutually convenient time to meet with you at the Auburn Public Library.
* Teen Library Advisory Board — The board will meet from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, at the Teen Space. The LAB is a joint venture between the Auburn Public Library and the library at Edward Little High School, 77 Harris St. Its mission is to create more awareness of and collaboration between both libraries, promoting everything the libraries offer teens in the community. The LAB meets bi-weekly, alternating meetings between the Auburn Public Library and Edward Little. Participants do not have to be Edward Little students. Teens interested in joining the discussions should be between the ages of 12 and 18, interested in community involvement and a lover of the library. * Tweens in the Teen Space — Noon to 2 p.m. Wednesdays, March 21 and 28, in the Teen Space. Sixth-graders are invited to meet on the second floor on half-day Wednesdays. There will be crafts or board games available or simply hang out or to get a head start on your homework.
* Teen Anime Club — 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, in the Androscoggin Community Room. For those ages 12-18, to drop in to talk about their favorite (or least favorite) manga, watch this week’s selection of anime, and try drawing their own characters. This program was made possible by a generous gift of the P&G Fund of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation. Snacks will be provided.
* Homework Help — Students in grades 7 through 12 can pick up some homework help Thursdays, March 8, 15, 22 and 29, 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the second floor study room. Stop by the library to get help with time management, schedule planning, goal setting and learn how to be successful with your homework. The program will include a healthy snack.
* SAPARS — Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services will provide a drop-in visit opportunity Tuesday, March 13,from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Teen Space. Visit with Julia, an advocate who will meet with teens to discuss the issues important to them, including consent, bullying, sexual assault and harassment, bystander intervention and internet safety. Visits may include question and answer, educational videos, or activities. All teens ages 12-18 are welcome to drop in. This event takes place the second Tuesday of each month in the Teen Space, and will include a snack.
* Teen Life Skills Series 2018 — Life skills series continues Tuesday, March 13, from 4 to 5 p.m. in the second floor study room as we turn attention to employment. Discussion will include how to look for and apply for jobs. Participants will complete a generic job application and learn how to craft a resume. Job interview process will be discussed Tuesday, March 27. For ages 15-19.
* Gaming Hour — Wednesdays, March 14 and 28, from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Androscoggin Community Room. The library has XBox and Wii and a small collection of games. Teens are welcome to bring their favorites, but only those rated T and E. Just for teens, ages 12-18.
* Safe Voices drop-in visit — Whitney from Safe Voices Tuesday, March 20, from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Teen Space. Each month, she will visit the library to chat about relationships and work on projects. Have a topic you’d like us to discuss? Let us know. This program is just for teens, ages 12-18.
