NORWAY — The Western Foothills Land Trust organized the 2018 Norway Snowshoe Festival with the theme of Polar Explorers. The snowshoe events were named after Norway’s W.F. Tubbs, founder of Tubbs Snowshoes Company in 1909.
Snowshoes, sleds, ski-moccasins and “sno-shu” chairs from the Tubbs’ company were used by Admiral Byrd’s South Pole Expedition in 1906.

This year’s festival also featured a family contradance at the Grange, with fiddler Pam Weeks and caller Bill Olson.
The snowshoe race participants also were able to have some fun with three-legged and wife-carrying races as well as musical chairs in the snow. The snowshoe events were held at Roberts Farm Preserve Feb. 17. Participants were treated to a fire-pit lunch provided by Norway Brewing Company, Café Nomad and Pietree Orchard. Fibre and Vine presented an era-based, Hortense Gates fashion parade with wooden snowshoes and wool outfits.
Around 60 people of all ages took part in the various snowshoe events that featured 2-, 5- and 10-kilometer races. Participants ranged in age from three to 65.
