AUBURN — The Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Lunch Club recently made two donations to local nonprofits that will help support the region’s elderly population as well as its youngsters.
The club presented a $4,500 to Catholic Charities for its elderly support program, and also provided money for laptops and tablets to Tree Street Youth.
The club presented a heck to Wendy Russell, director of Catholic Charities SEARCH (Seek Elderly Alone, Renew Courage & Hope) program, that will provide a laptop, client assistance funding for seniors with emergency response services and transportation support assistance via bus passes and gas cards.
“Rotary unites leaders from continents, cultures and occupations to exchange ideas and take action to meet the needs of communities around the world,” said L-A Rotary President Monica Millhime. “Supporting the SEARCH program aligns our Rotary mission with involvement in our community to support programs that strengthen the capacity of communities to provide economic and community development. Our club members embrace the concept of healthy, physical, social, emotional and academic development for senior citizens.”
One of the 2017-18 goals of the club was also to provide laptops and iPads to the Tree Street Youth program, 144 Howe St., Lewiston.
“Providing financial assistance to TSY aligns with our club’s mission and focus on literacy,” said Millhime. “The new technology will provide community support to the programs currently offered at Tree and will strengthen their capacity to continue providing basic education, literacy and technology skill sets. We are delighted to be able to provide the partnership and resources enabling students to write college essays, research career paths, apply for jobs and complete other necessary tasks to pursue college and careers.”
Since 2011, the youth support organizatoin has served more than 800 children. Seventeen different languages are spoken at the club, including Arabic, French, Spanish, Somali and Swahili.
“Providing education, along with technology tools, offers students the ability to embrace and accept an opportunity to be more literate in a changing, demanding world and develops leadership, accountability and life skills to be successful,” said Millhime.
The L-A Rotary Club was founded in 1917 and has made more than $750,000 in charitable contributions through scholarships and donations.
Rotary members meet weekly from noon to 1 p.m. at the Village Inn, 165 High Street, Auburn.
