AUGUSTA — Sen. Nate Libby, D-Lewiston, and Rep. Bettyann Sheats, D-Auburn, were honored by the Maine Wing of the Civil Air Patrol, Maine’s civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force.
The two, as well as Rep. Robert Alley, D-Beals, were made honorary majors in a ceremony at the State House.
“The Maine branch of the Civil Air Patrol does a lot of good work, especially for young people, in communities all across the state,” said Libby, who is assistant Senate Democratic leader. “I am honored by this honorary promotion and look forward to continue working with them in this capacity.”
Sheats said she’s excited “to become a part of this important organization.”
“It will be a great way to continue my military service in a fun and productive way,” she said. “I have been on the board of the Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport for several years and have watched members of the CAP, young and old, promoting service and aviation in an environment I highly respect.”
Col. James Jordan, the Maine Wing Commander, and Lt. Col. Jerry DeWitt were on hand to present lawmakers with their rank. Also attending was Rep. Janice Cooper, D-Yarmouth.
Founded in 1941, the Civil Air Patrol initially served to defend the coast but now focuses its efforts on youth development, local search and rescue missions, disaster relief and homeland security.
