More than 200 participants gather on the Arboretum grounds for the snowshoe, ski or hike on groomed trails, stopping at food stations along the way. The event involves healthy outdoor activity, supporting the Arboretum, and perhaps best of all the food, organizers said.
Offerings available from restaurants and food providers in and around the Capital City include chowder to fresh baked breads, barbecue, Mexican and steaming hot turkey and all the fixings. The wrapup dessert table has freshly brewed coffee, wine, beer and a variety of desserts. Organizers said it’s “a great way to get some fun exercise before settling down to watch the football game.”
Mark DesMeules, the Arboretums’ executive director commented, “This is the only event of its kind that I know of and it offers a healthy and fun opportunity to meet people, get outdoors, enjoy some terrific food, and support the many new programs and initiatives being developed at the Arboretum. The course is even more interesting with dozens of beautiful stone sculptures at various points along the trail and warming fires at every food station.”
Tickets are on sale by contacting the Arboretum at 207-626-7989. Tickets are $20 (members $18), 10 years old and under cost $5 with no charge for toddlers. There is also a special group rate of $15 per ticket if you purchase five or more tickets as a “group” so call your friends, pull together a business outing, etc.
Tickets will be available the day of the event from 10 a.m. to noon. This will also be the time anyone can pick up previously purchased tickets. Trails open at 11 a.m. and trail food will be served till 1 p.m. Desserts, coffee, hot beverages, beer and wine will be served until 2 p.m. at the main building located at the end of the course along with live music from the band Piggery Road.
