SeniorsPlus January calendar includes health classes, book club

LEWISTON — The Education Center at SeniorsPlus has announced its January calendar, which includes breast health and diabetes seminars, as well as balance instruction, a book club and more.

Breast Health: Risk Reduction will take place form 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Jan 9, presented by medical professionals from St. Mary’s breast health department. Discussions will focus on how to best reduce one’s risk regarding breast health, as well as imaging for breast surveillance.

A session for t hose with diabetes, as well as those who have a family member or with it or would like to avoid getting the disease, will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, with Christopher Irish, diabetes nurse educator, Androscoggin Homecare & Hospice. The class will go over the basics of diabetes, its causes and ways to best manage the disease to help avoid its destructive complications.

A Matter of Balance sessions will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan 9 through Feb. 27, with instructors Amanda Peralta, Mitzi Sequoia and Jackie Gammon, Rumford Hospital Conference Room B, 420 Franklin St., Rumford. The eight-week workshop is designed to reduce the fear of falling and to increase activity levels among older adults. Learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change your environment to reduce fall risk factors, and learn simple strength and balance exercises. (Limited to 14 participants.)

The book club will meet from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, and continue the second Wednesday of every month. January’s book is “Love and Treasure,” by Ayelet Waldman.
