NORWAY — The Cancer Resource Center of Western Maine, located in the Stephens Memorial Hospital Specialty Clinic building at 199 Main St, announces its February calendar. The center offers a variety of free programs throughout the month to people affected by cancer.
This month there are two new activities. Sarah Carter from Healthy Oxford Hills will lead a nutrition class followed by a light lunch, and Cathy at Lively Accents will have a session on how to make a Kumihimo bracelet. In case of inclement weather, activities sponsored by the center are cancelled when SAD 17 cancels school.
DROP-IN HOURS are every from9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Volunteers are available to provide comfort items such as port protectors, wigs, hats, pillows or find resources. Pick up brochures or use our lending library. The center is also a place to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea, chat with a volunteer or take time for yourself by participating in activities offered.
WOMEN’S CANCER SUPPORT GROUP is from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb.7. Bring a bag lunch or snack. Call Patti-Ann at 744-6173 for more information.
MEN’S CANCER SUPPORT GROUP is from 4 to 5 p.m. Feb. 14 and 28. Vance Jordan will lead this encouragement and support group. Men who have recently been recently diagnosed with cancer, in treatment or are survivors are invited to attend as well as men who are or have been caregivers. BANDING TOGETHER TO RESTORE is from 11 a.m. to noon Mondays, Feb. 6, 13, 20 and 27, at Richard Bader Physical Therapy, 176 Main St. The program, led by Lori Britting, is focused on regaining motion and strength through guided instruction using stretching and colored Therabands. Each participant will be encouraged to work within their abilities to safely gain their desired goals. Getting back your energy and the ability to move easier and carry out your daily tasks and enjoying life are part of this program. Preregistration is encouraged. YOGA WARRIORS is from 3 to 3:45 p.m. Mondays, Feb. 6, 13 and 27, at Posabilities, 15 Tannery St. This free gentle yoga class will support healthy living for individuals facing the challenges of cancer through gentle movement and breath, supportive restorative yoga postures, and guided mediation and relaxation. YOGA FOR WELLNESS is from 8 to 9 a.m. Fridays. Either Kat Larsen or Sherri will teach the class at the center, which will include breathing, movement and relaxing meditation while seated or standing. Check the website for more information.
CHAIR YOGA is from 2 to 3 p.m. Fridays. Sherri leads the class in chair yoga. No mats are necessary; chairs are provided.
WALK AND TALK WITH DAVID. Looking for someone to walk around Norway or South Paris with? David will share his favorite walking routes. Call 739-7027 to schedule a time.
GUIDED MEDITATION GATHERING is from 1 to 1:45p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8. Guided meditation promotes relaxation, which will lower your stress. Using your imagination, along with your five senses, you may find yourself in a tranquil state that is rejuvenating. There are no known risks associated with guided meditation, so why not give it a try! Susan Kane will lead the meditation.
REIKI 1 SELF-CARE is from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28. Learn to practice reiki for yourself. Reiki 1 self-care will offer you relief from some of the stress and discomfort you may be experiencing. Reiki complements the medical treatments prescribed by your physician. Charlotte LaBelle will be the instructor. Individual sessions may be scheduled with Charlotte between 2 and 3:30 p.m. Call 890-7063 to schedule your session.
TEN TIPS FOR HEALTH from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 13. Sarah Carter, community nutrition educator from Healthy Oxford Hills, will be offering this fun and interactive class. They will be discussing ways to increase fruits and vegetables in your diet, sharing recipes and taste testing, too. A light lunch will follow.
STAMPIN’ UP from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7. Kathy provides materials and instruction to make a variety of cards. It is fun and easy to do.
COMMUNITY CANCER CUT AND SEW is from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesdays, Feb. 8 and 22, and from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Sew Orchid Design, 316 Main St. Participants cut out material for bonnets and other comfort items needed by the center. Sewing kits are assembled for people to take home to sew or sew them while you are there.
FABRIC CRAFTING WITH BARBARA is from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Sew Orchid Design, 316 Main St. Barbara Daigle is teaching a series of non-sewing or beginner sewing crafts for participants to complete.
MAKE A KUMIHIMO BRACELET on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at Lively Accents, 310 Main St. Cathy will teach how to make these Japanese braided bracelets.
KNITTING AND CROCHETING from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursdays.
COLORING FOR ADULTS from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursdays. Coloring books and a variety of markers are available.
CARDS AND GAMES are from 1 to 2 p.m. Fridays. Various games are available at the center to play or participants may bring one of their own to get a game started.
