TURNER – Turner Public Library has scheduled a series of events to help area residents start the new year right.
All events are free, open to the public, and take place at the Leavitt Institute.
The Library’s Chopstick Challenge building competition will close at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, with all entries due at the Library. Judging will begin on Saturday, Jan. 6, and the awards will be presented on Thursday, Jan. 11. More details can be found on the website at www.turnerpubliclibrary.org.
If you received a new mobile device over the holidays and would like to use it to read eBooks or listen to audiobooks, attend one of TPL’s Cloud Library Digital Device Drop-ins from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9. Cloud Library is the free electronic library collection of eBooks and audiobooks for all TPL patron cardholders. There are over 300,000 titles available including popular fiction, non-fiction, kids, and children’s books. Bring your mobile device to TPL for help downloading the app, completing the registration, and filling your online queue with great reads. If you need to obtain or renew a library card, the staff will be ready to assist.
January’s Family Board Game Night on the Friday, Jan. 12, will host game designer Tom Deschenes, Lewiston native and creator of Quest for the Antidote, a new board game published by Upper Deck. Quest for the Antidote challenges players to journey to an apothecary and find a cure before they’ve used up all their breath! This family game has a suggested age range of 13+ and takes approximately one hour to play. TPL has a variety of games for all ages. Game Night begins at 6 p.m.
Story Hour for Saturday, Jan. 13, is all about snow. There will be a snowy story, a snowy craft, and a snowy snack with one of the library’s storytellers. Story Hour is loads of fun for young patrons and begins at 10 a.m.
If you’re a sole proprietor interested in using Excel for your business, TPL has a class for you. Beginning at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, TPL will hold “Easy Excel for Micro Business.” This class will focus on the basics of getting started in Excel with spreadsheet templates and formulas for budgeting, inventory, invoicing, and planning. Bring your laptop with Excel pre-loaded for best results. TPL’s final event of January will be the first performance for the 2018 Winter Concert Series with the duo Velocipede. Julia Plumb on fiddle and foot percussion, and Baron Collins-Hill as tenor and on guitar, mandolin, will play original and traditional fiddle tunes from New England, Quebec, Appalachia, Scandinavia, and the British Isles. The performance starts at 7 p.m.
