MECHANIC FALLS – Elm Street Elementary School’s sixth-grade class had a special visit from their state senator, Eric Brakey, R-Androscoggin, on Dec. 1.
During the visit, the students arranged a mock legislature, with each student serving as a member of the House of Representatives for the day to walk through the process of how a bill becomes a law.
Rep. Boaz proposed a bill to allow 12-year-olds to be able to work part time jobs. It received a strong 9-2 vote in the Labor Committee and, after much debate back and forth, passed in the House 26-15. After passing the Senate, it was vetoed by the governor. The House fell two votes short of overriding the veto.
“These students made strong arguments in debate and asked great questions,” said Brakey. “They are Maine’s future leaders and I’m optimistic we are in good hands. Thank you to sixth grade teacher, Valerie Young, for inviting me to come speak.”
Brakey’s District 20 includes Auburn, where he lives, as well as Mechanic Falls, Poland, New Gloucester and Minot.
