LEWISTON — The 2017 Parade of Lights took a different route this year, directing its many lighted floats and Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus into part of New Auburn.
Youngsters and parents lining the pathway were treated to municipal vehicles and floats draped in colorful holiday lighting.
Several floats by local business, non-profits and churches provided other Christmas touches — like the popular Polar Express and the Grinch — along with dogs outfitted with seasonal outerwear and characters like the “Cat in the Hat” with his striped hat and red tie.
Hundreds gathered in Auburn’s Festival Plaza where the parade finished its 45-minute journey from Kennedy Park in Lewiston. Santa took time for lines of children in each location to hear their wishes, as parents’ cameras and smart phones captured the moments.
Holiday music filled the plaza, while city employees served free doughnut holes and hot chocolate. When the parade arrived, Santa hit the switch to light Auburn’s Christmas Tree, just as he had done for Lewiston’s.
