SOUTH PARIS — University College in Rumford and South Paris provides local access to all seven campuses of the University of Maine System.
More than 100 degrees and certificates can be completed locally at the Rumford and South Paris centers as well as in Bethel, Lewiston, Livermore Falls and online. Earning a college degree has never been more convenient or affordable, and students have access to full university support and services right in their own community.
Jim Bradley, director of UC Rumford and South Paris, announced recently there are many scholarships available to new and transfer students. “One of our most popular is the Osher Scholarship, allowing first-time students to take a college course completely free — even books are paid for,” he noted. “The process is simple and doesn’t require applying to a University or even filling out financial aid paperwork. All someone has to do it setup an appointment with one of our advisors to get started.”
Sarita Goodman, a student at UC South Paris pursuing her degree from the University of Maine at Augusta, got started using the Osher Scholarship. “Having the scholarship gave me a chance to try a class to see what the college experience would be like and to see if I could learn what was needed,” Goodman said She is earning credits so she can ear a degree an educational technician. This fall she was named a “UMA Rising Scholar” for her academic achievements.
High school juniors and seniors also can take university classes and have the tuition and fees waived. “The High School Aspirations program allows students to take two classes each semester for a total of 24 credits before they graduate, Bradley stated. “In addition to saving thousands of dollars in tuition and fees, earning university credits prior to graduating makes these students more likely to be accepted to the schools they want to attend after graduation.”
The Pine State Pledge, a tuition-waiver program through the University of Maine at Augusta, waives tuition and fees for qualified Pell-eligible new and transfer students, Bradley added. “If a Pell grant isn’t enough to cover the tuition and fees — UMA waives the balance saving students money.
“We also have Adult Degree Completion scholarships that provide up to $16,000 for returning students who have had a gap of three or more years and have earned 30 or more credits.”
