SOUTH PARIS — Oxford County Commissioners recently awarded 10 county residents the Spirit of America Award for outstanding volunteerism in their communities. Commissioners Steven Merrill, David Duguay and Timothy Turner invited the recipients to the office on Western Avenue for a brief ceremony Oct. 17.
The Maine Spirit of America Foundation was established in 1990 to recognize local organizations and individuals for commendable community service. Since the first Spirit of America award was handed out to Alma Jones from Washington in 1991, more than 500 such awards have been given for volunteerism in the state.
Gary “Butch” Fuller of Greenwood, Priscilla Howard of Hiram, Barbara Chow of Dixfield, Gary Dolloff of Rumford, Arlene Greenleaf of Bethel, Maria Holloway of Hanover, the Mexico Police Explorers, Robert Worthley of Roxbury, Dana Chandler of Paris and George and Thelma Hooper of Woodstock are the Oxford County recipients.
These individuals and organizations have contributed in a variety of ways, including organizing town celebrations, participating in fundraising, historical society and community centers, serving on the school board, as fire and rescue directors, and selectman; volunteering with town parks/recreation, home building for handicapped, food pantries and assisting the community’s youth. All of the recipients have been involved in more than one of these activities.
