RANGELEY — The Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust staff has recommended some of their favorite area hikes, and encourages people to take a break from their routine and get outdoors for a walk before the winter weather hits.
The trust has hikes for all abilities, including: Bald Mountain, which Shelby Rousseau, stewardship director, is a great family trail with spectacular 306-degree views of the lakes region.
Though it’s not on the trust’s property, its conserved by the state and the trust. Office manager Stacy Clinch recommends the Forest Legacy Trail on Route 16, which she said is beautiful.
“The trail offers a dense forest and there is lots of moss covered rocks to enjoy along with the patchwork foliage on the landscape.” Program manager Amanda Laliberte said the South Bog Trail “is beautiful all year long, but the fall is my favorite time to take this stroll. The tree types along the way offer a variety of colors and the bog that awaits you at the end will peak early in the season.”
Intern Alyssa Andrews suggests getting off the trails and into the water, too. “I’d recommend a paddle down the Kennebago River. Put in at Steep Bank Pool and taking out at the bridge on Route 16. The water will be low but it’s a great family adventure and the foliage on the opposing mountains is stunning. RLHT has stewards 3000 acres along the river.”
