AUGUSTA — Kennebec Savings Bank has contributed $15,200 to Good Shepherd Food Bank in an effort to ease hunger in Kennebec County. This donation will support 38 local food banks and pantries in their mission to provide nutritious food and warm meals to those in need during the cold winter months.
“Partnering with Good Shepherd made sense to us. Especially when you consider that $1.00 donated to the food bank provides approximately four meals worth of food,” said Kennebec Savings Bank President and CEO Andrew Silsby. “It really amplifies the value of our donation when you consider this contribution will result in more than 60,000 meals.”
“While awareness of hunger in Maine is heightened during the holiday season and during the cold, winter months, we find that the demand for food is constant the whole year through,” said Good Shepherd Vice President of Development Erin Fogg.
Access to food is a significant problem for many individuals and families in Kennebec County. The most recent data from Feeding America suggests 15 percent of the residents of Kennebec County are food insecure. This works out to approximately 18,280 individuals who lack access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members and limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods.
As the largest hunger relief organization in Maine, Good Shepherd Food Bank gathers and distributes millions of pounds of food each year to 400 partner agencies across the state, including food pantries, meal sites, schools and senior programs. In 2015 alone, the food bank distributed 20 million meals to families, children and seniors in need throughout Maine.
The gift was made on Dec. 28 at the Good Shepherd Food Bank’s Auburn office and warehouse. Silsby presented the check to Fogg following a brief tour of the facility. The donation sets up a credit of $400 with the food bank for each of 38 partner agencies in Kennebec County.
“We are delighted and honored to have Kennebec Savings Bank’s generous support in the fight to end hunger,” said Fogg. “The bank’s gift will allow dozens of the food bank’s ending-hunger partners in Kennebec County to access and provide meals for families, children, seniors and other neighbors facing food insecurity.”
With this donation, Kennebec Savings Bank continues to foster a culture of giving in Kennebec County.
