TURNER — Maine School Administrative District 52 Adult Education is celebrating National Adult Education Family Literacy Week by awarding students free books to share with their family and friends.
The week is an opportunity for adult education programs to educate communities about programs and support systems for the 36 million adults in the U.S. with limited English or reading skills, according to a news release from the school district, which includes Turner, Greene and Leeds.
Low education and skill levels of adults are a fundamental barrier to every major challenge facing the United States, including early childhood education, education reform, economic development and improving the health and well-being of the nation’s families and communities.
Access to adult education programs have shown a 20 percent decrease in the number of adults without a high school diploma, the release said.
MSAD 52 is a leader in providing academic instruction aligned to college and career readiness standards with preparation and coaching for individuals without a high school diploma, the release said.
