WINTHROP — On Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2016, a Kennebec County resident who wishes to remain anonymous donated 26 acres on Horseshoe Island on Lake Cobbossee to the Kennebec Land Trust. A trail and property dedication is scheduled for August 2017.
The donor of the property noted: “I am pleased to give this 26-acre parcel to the Kennebec Land Trust for the enjoyment of people today and for future generations. With over 3,317 feet of shoreline on Lake Cobbossee, this property will allow the Kennebec Land Trust to expand its trail system on Horseshoe Island, offering varied terrain and scenic views to hikers? young and old.”
Located in Winthrop, this new KLT property features extensive undeveloped shoreline, valuable wetlands, and old-growth hardwoods, pines, and hemlocks. With this donation, KLT has conserved 72 acres over the past 23 years on Cobbossee Lake’s Horseshoe, Hodgdon, and Perry Islands.
The Kennebec Land Trust’s properties on Lake Cobbossee provide year-round outdoor recreation opportunities for residents and visitors including paddling, birding, fishing, hiking, hunting, and snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter. KLT’s staff, volunteers and interns maintain trails on all three islands. Howard Lake, KLT attorney, noted that: “The islands on Lake Cobbossee are important ecological, scenic and recreational resources. KLT is pleased to accept such a generous donation.”
SINCE 1988, KLT has worked cooperatively with landowners and communities to conserve the forests, shorelands, fields, and wildlife that define central Maine. The Trust’s conserved lands encompass over 5,628 acres in the Kennebec River and Lakes region.
