AUBURN — The Androscoggin Historical Society will host a program on Maine waterfalls, featuring Patricia Hughes and based upon her book, “Maine’s Waterfalls: A Comprehensive Guide.” The talk takes place Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. at the society’s Davis-Wagg Museum on the third floor of the Androscoggin County Building at Court and Turner streets.
The Great Falls in Lewiston and Auburn testify to the economic history of our region. Similar falls were an engine for development of many Maine towns throughout the state. Falls were important to Native Americans for fishing. They continue to stimulate Maine’s economy through generation of electric power and as tourist attractions.
A resident of Dixmont, Hughes will discuss the features of some of the 177 waterfalls in the state. She explores the history, photographic quality and accessibility of those in Androscoggin County and beyond. She is the author also of “Lost Loot: Ghostly New England Treasure Tales.”
“Waterfalls are magical,” she says. “Exploring the treasure-rich, mysterious, magical history of New England is just one more excuse I use to play outside in any season!”
