LEWISTON — SeniorsPlus has received a $10,000 grant from the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation to continue to develop a dining site and cooking classes, with interpretation and written translation, for older adult refugees in downtown Lewiston.

The program, which was launched this past year, focuses on cooking and sourcing nutritious food, including local farm food, as well as creating a hub for social interaction. SeniorsPlus will continue to work with the St. Mary’s Nutrition Center and Health Androscoggin on the program, the organization said in a news release.

“We have enjoyed working with new Mainer older adults in Lewiston over the past year to better their familiarity with local food and to create a social hub,” said Betsy Sawyer-Manter, president and CEO of SeniorsPlus in the release.

This grant is to support the continuation of the Healthy Food for Every Age grant that SeniorsPlus received from the foundation last year. The program at SeniorsPlus was one of among 22 not-for-profit initiatives that the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation funded in Massachusetts, Maine, and New Hampshire, the release said.

SeniorsPlus is the western Maine designated agency on aging, covering Franklin, Oxford and Androscoggin counties. The overall program goal of SeniorsPlus, which is headquartered in Lewiston, is to assist older adults and adults with disabilities in Franklin, Oxford and Androscoggin counties to remain safely at home for as long as possible. The mission of SeniorsPlus is to enrich the lives of seniors and adults with disabilities. SeniorsPlus believes in supporting the independence, dignity and quality of life of those we serve.
