AUBURN — The Auburn Public Library is offering a series of interactive events to examine climate trends in Maine, and help explain climate change.
The program, three monthly one-hour sessions beginning Thursday, Sept. 7, is supported by a grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Science Foundation.
There will also be programs on Thursday, Oct. 5 and Nov. 9. All programs will begin at 6 p.m.
Pushing the Limits, or PLACE, consists of programs designed to engage community discussion with professional guidance provided by NOAA scientist. Nikki Becker, of the National Weather Service in Gray, will be the facilitator.
The events are something of a science café and book club hybrid. with each event organized around a different theme — community, change, or strategy, said adult services manager Marty Gagnon.
Topics discussed will include what climate change is, what extreme weather trends are worrisome and how communities are preparing to protect residents against extreme weather events.
Before each program, participants will be asked to read portions of “The Thinking Person’s Guide to Climate Change,” by Robert Henson. Copies of the book may be picked up at the second floor desk at the Auburn Public Library. Space is limited, so those wishing to participate must register when they come to pick up the book.
