AUBURN — The Auburn Community Concert Band has announced rehearsals for its upcoming holiday concert season will begin Wednesday, Sept 13. The band has a particular need for additional people who play clarinet, bass clarinet, tenor sax, French horn, or tuba, along with drum set players who can read music. This is an ideal opportunity for former high school and college band members to once again experience the enjoyment of performing for others.
Membership requires minimum conflicts with the group’s weekly evening rehearsals and concerts, noted director Milt Simon, adding members must also have their own instruments. The rehearsals take place Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. at High Street Congregational Church, 106 Pleasant St., located between High and Pleasant streets. The group’s annual holiday concert is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 20, at the Dolard and Priscilla Gendron Franco Center, 46 Cedar St., Lewiston. Other Wednesday evening performances are also planned for earlier in the month.
Currently, the ACCB has 42 members, ranging in age from 13 to 88. These members collectively represent a total of 16 Maine towns. Before joining this organization, many of the group’s volunteer musicians had last played in a school or community band some 20 to 30 years ago, Simon pointed out. “New members are often nervous when they first join, because of the lapse of time since they last practiced,” he said, adding, “most players regain their former instrumental skills relatively quickly.”
Prospective members, he continued, who are unable to participate in a minimum of two rehearsals during September, will have a second opportunity to join the band during the group’s open membership month in January.
