MECHANIC FALLS — The Mechanic Falls Historical Society, together with members of the Anglican Church of the Transfiguration, will hold a free concert Sunday, Sept. 10, at 3 p.m. at the Anglican Church (formerly the First Congregational Church), 64 Elm St. Titled “Organ Plus,” the concert will feature nationally-known organist Mark Thallander. Although there is no admission, all free-will donations will go toward maintenance of the 116-year-old pipe organ at the church.
Thallander, who lives in Palm Springs, Calif., and Ogunquit, is a free-lance organist, composer and author; president of the Mark Thallander Foundation, established in 2005 to bring joyous and inspirational musical events to communities nationwide; and president and honorary board member of the National Children’s Chorus. He is recognized for his ministry at The Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, Calif. During his 18-year tenure at the church, he coordinated the thousand voices for the gala dedication of the Hazel Wright Organ. Joining the staff there in January 1976 as music associate, has assisted Dr. and Mrs. Robert H. Schuller with “Hour of Power” television scripting, service programming and musical guests.
A devastating auto accident in 2003 was a turning point in his career. A traffic accident on the Maine Turnpike, in a rainstorm, claimed Thallander’s left arm. Undeterred, he stepped up to the challenges presented and continues to perform organ concerts around the country. Thallander will be joined by other area musicians including a violinist, trumpet player, harpist and bagpiper.
