SOUTH PARIS — Market Square Health Care Center, 3 Market Square, will be opening a 16-resident memory care facility in late summer. The old Andrews House, previously a senior living residence, has already undergone extensive renovations since it was purchased by North Country Associates in 2014. The addition of Memory Care at Market Square will bring to the Oxford Hills region badly needed individualized care for people with cognitive impairments.
“Keeping those with cognitive impairment close to family and their communities is a large component of their care and well-being,” said Ed Fitzpatrick, the facility administrator. Fitzpatrick has served in the health care industry since 1978, bringing years of experience to his position as a multi-level, long-term care administrator. “Often families become overwhelmed by the needs of a family member with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Memory care is the solution to these challenges. It helps residents live with a safe level of independence and engagement and gives families peace of mind.”
The new, state-of-the-art memory care facility with have large, sunny, well-appointed suites, a private dining area and social areas, safe and secure access to outdoor spaces and resident gardens. Memory Care at Market Square will offer assistance with all the regular activities of daily living, as well as socialization, a wide variety of menu options, and around-the-clock supervision.
“The Andrews House and Market Square Health Care have been operating as a long-term care facility for seniors since the early 1970s and added services and quality levels of care over the years based on the growing needs of the community,” said Bonnie McAlister, physical plant director at Market Square, who has worked at the facility since 1985. In 1991, under the operation of Stephens Memorial Hospital, the facility added skilled nursing and full residential services for seniors; the facility has been growing ever since.
Market Square Health Care Center in South Paris now operates as a continuing care and senior living community, offering skilled nursing, in-patient and out-patient rehabilitation, long-term and residential care. Memory Care at Market Square is a proud addition to the facility.
“Memory care is compassionate, individualized care that fosters connectivity between the resident, their care-givers, families and the community. This relationship-based approach recognizes each resident’s unique qualities, needs, preferences and spirit,” said Amy Boivin, the memory care unit’s new manager and care coordinator. Boivin said she is excited to join the Market Square community. She has been managing the memory care unit at Schooner Estates in Auburn for the last seven years.
As the senior population grows rapidly, Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia are also on the rise. The Alzheimer’s Association reports more than five million people are living with Alzheimer’s in 2017; this number could more than triple by 2050. Someone in the United States develops the disease every 66 seconds, and the demand for cognitive care will steadily increase in the immediate future.
