National Constitution Day to be held Sept. 17

Aug. 152017

AUBURN — In conjunction with Constitution Day, the Optimist Clubs of Lewiston-Auburn and the Tri-Town Optimist Club of Minot, Poland and Mechanic Falls will be making available free, pocket-sized versions of the U. S. Constitution for use in classrooms or for home studies to any interested schools or students.

A federal law passed in 2004 requires all schools receiving federal funding provide a course to all students on the Constitution on September 17, the date of ratification. The law — H.R. 4818 — and the text can be found in section 111(b). The Founding Fathers ratified the Constitution in 1787. The current law was passed with the urging of then Senator Robert Byrd (D-W. Va.), who is remembered for always carrying a copy of the Constitution with him in his pocket.

Quantities are limited and will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. To order, please contact any Optimist Club member or call 207-783-5269.
