AUBURN — St. Dominic Academy high school students will be back on the interscholastic football field this fall after more than 60 years.
The school reached an agreement with Lisbon High School and the Maine Principal’s Association to allow St. Dom’s students to play on the Lisbon team. The schools announced the move Aug. 3.
St. Dominic last last fielded an interscholastic football team in 1956 and an intramural one in 1961. The cooperative agreement is open to new and returning students at St. Dom. Last season, the Greyhounds of Lisbon wpn the Class D Southern Maine Regional Championship title.
“We are very excited to bring football back to St. Dom’s,” said J.P. Yorkey, the academy’s dean of students and athletics. “Upon being hired last year, it was clear to me that there was interest from the school and the community in providing current and prospective students the opportunity to play high school football. We are extremely grateful to the Lisbon coaches, administrators, and community for making this opportunity a reality.”
Lisbon Athletic Director and Assistant Principal Eric Hall said the high school is looking forward to the season. “It’s an exciting time for our team,” he said. “Along with this new partnership with St. Dom’s, this year we have a new head coach, Chris Kates.”
The Lisbon/St. Dom’s team takes on Bucksport at its first home game (non-conference) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2. Game and practice schedules can be found at www.stdomsathletics.com.
