ALFRED — Four central Maine students are among a dozen who have won scholarships from the MES Foundation for a total of $60,000 in awards.
Ten students were named Richard H. Pierce Memorial Scholarship winners, and two were awarded the MES Foundation Scholarship from the organization, which was formerly Maine Education Services.
The foundation’s goal is to help students afford a college education. Area Pierce winners include Amanda Alberda, of Lewiston High School; Ravin Davis, of Madison High School; Anna Dunbar, of Mount Blue High School; and Erin Qiu, of Gardiner Area High School. The Richard H. Pierce Memorial Scholarship winners each get $5,000 towards their 2017-2018 post-secondary education. Established in honor of MES founder Dick Pierce, who died in 2011, the scholarship is awarded based on distinguished academic merit and financial need. The Pierce Scholarship is renewable for up to four years. The MES Board of Directors also selected two Maine graduates to receive the MES Foundation Scholarship in the amount of $5,000, renewable for up to two years. “Our goal is to help alleviate some of the financial burden placed on Maine students and their families, while they continue their post-secondary education,” said MES Foundation President Darren Hurlburt. “And we are proud to be able to support these 12 outstanding young men and women.” Beginning in January 2018, scholarship applications for the 2018/2019 academic year will be available online at www.mesfoundation.org.
