LEWISTON – Recently Community Credit Union presented the St. Mary’s Food Pantry with a $500 check. St. Mary’s Food Pantry provides food for more than 580 people per week. In 2016, 11,510 boxes of food provided enough healthy food for two-day emergency relief for 30,340 people (up nearly 35% over the previous year). The pantry is located on Bates Street.
Community Credit Union participates in the Maine Credit Union League’s initiative known as the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger. Maine credit unions have raised more than $7.2 million since 1990 to help end hunger in Maine. At the end of each year, all of the money raised by each individual participating credit union is given back to that credit union to be distributed to hunger organization in their community. In 2016, participating Maine credit unions raised a new record total of $674,000 for the Ending Hunger Campaign.
