WAYNE — This year’s Cary’s Silent Auction will launch with an opening reception Thursday, Aug. 3, from 5 to 7 p.m., serving wine and light hors d’oeuvres. The auction will be set up at the Cary Library’s Williams House, 14 Old Winthrop Road, showcasing the varied donations that have arrived this year. Many donations are estate items, including a number of fine old pieces from Wayne Village Pottery.
Hand-crafted needlework, framed art, china, pottery and many intriguing “attic treasures” from the area should make the display great fun to browse. A children’s area will feature a sweet dollhouse and the “special edition” hand-made Phoebe and Phillip (phoebe chicks) and the storybook to accompany them. There will be lots of buy-it-now items — some quirky, some one-of-a-kind. Of note is a Kawartha 15-foot square stern canoe, complete with working engine, displayed on the front lawn. There will be a pair of Red Sox vs.Yankee tickets for the Aug. 19 game at Fenway Park in Boston, which will get underway at 7 p.m. Another fun offering will be the two-night stay in Gettysburg with guided tour of the Gettysburg Battlefield.
Auction hours will coincide mostly with library hours and are scheduled as follows:
* Aug. 3 — 5 to 7 p.m. * Aug. 5 — 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. * Aug. 7 — 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. * Aug. 8 — 4 to 6 p.m. * Aug. 9 — 1 to 7 p.m. * Aug. 10 — 4 to 6 p.m. * Aug. 12 — 9 a.m. to noon; bidding concludes at noon.
Anyone planning to attend the Friends of the Library’s “Cary Festival & Lobster Roll Lunch” Saturday, Aug. 5, will find the auction rooms open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for browsing.
