FAYETTE — The Echo Lake Community is holding a plant paddle from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Aug. 15 at Camp Winnebago.
The paddle will be held rain or shine and is open to the public.
Participants will join Echo Lake’s volunteer Invasive Plant Patrol paddling, collecting aquatic plants,and learning how to tell valuable native plants from the destructive invaders.
The guided exploration takes place on shore and on the water. It’s a fun, informal way to learn about aquatic plants and the effort to keep them from gaining a foothold in our beautiful and ecologically important lake, organizers said. Participants will receive a free “Quick Key to Ruling Out Maine’s Eleven Most Unwanted Invasive Aquatic Plants,” along with hands-on training to spot suspicious plants while recreating on the water.
Participants may bring their own boat, or use one of the camp’s. No experience is necessary. Kids ages 10 and up are welcome, with supervision. Organizers are also looking for volunteers to help with the event.
