GRAY — Join the New England Mineral Association Saturday, July 15, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.at the Maine Wildlife Park, 56 Game Park Road, off Route 26, to learn all about Maine’s tremendous variety of rocks and minerals. Association members will have several cases of minerals and gemstones found from different localities in Maine on display.
In addition, there will be several hands-on education stations set up to help parents and children learn about the interesting minerals found in the state, along with knowledgeable people to help answer questions and help get you started in this rewarding hobby.
Some of the activities include:
* Learn how to pan for gold
* Sluice for minerals
* Identify minerals
* Displays of minerals and gems
* Talk with miners, gem cutters, collectors and scientists
* Travel around the rock cycle
* Learn about fossils
* Learn about the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum
* Learn how to participate in the Mineral and Gem poster contest
New England is rich in mineral and gem resources. What better way to learn about earth science and New England’s special gems and minerals than to spend a day designed especially for hands-on learning. More information about rocks, gems and minerals can be found at _www.nemineraleducation.org _
The Maine Wildlife Park is owned and operated by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, with more than 30 species of native wildlife on display, plus wildlife gardens, nature trails, a fish hatchery and other interactive exhibits and displays. The park is open daily from April 15 through November 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; visitors may then stay until 6 p.m.
Admission to the park is free for ages 3 and under; $5.50 ages 4-12; $7.50 for adults, and $5.50 for seniors. Groups of 15 or more are $3.50 per person. Bring a picnic and spend the day! Family and Community Season Passes are available, and are an incredible bargain for families and groups that visit the park several times over the course of the summer.
