AUBURN — John Blanchette and Christopher Hodgkin, co-directors for the Oscar-winning “SHREK the Musical” — coming to Lewiston-Auburn Community Little Theatre Aug. 11 through 20 — are announcing the huge cast that has been rehearsing for several weeks.
Major parts include Gerry Therrien as Shrek and Ashley Gallagher as Fiona. Chad Jacobson is Donkey, Dan Kane is Lord Farquaad, and Sophie Messina is the Dragon.
Supporting roles are played by Ben Proctor as Papa Ogre and Papa Bear; Tracy Draper as Mama Ogre and Mama Bear; Riley Moyse as Young Shrek and Grumpy. Madeleine Vaillancourt plays Young Fiona and Baby Bear; and Hayden Thomas plays Teen Fiona and Tap Rat.
Multiple roles as guards, knights and townspeople are aptly played by Ken Mansur (Captain of the Guard), Brian DuBois (Thelonious Monk), Eric Yim (Knight), Olivia DuBois (Snow White), Riley McCurdy and Abigail Hart (Tap Rats), and Jim McKinley (Bishop).
The Fairytale Creatures also have multiple roles, in addition to those listed here, and are played with great gusto by Mason Lagasse (Pinocchio), Mackenzie Richard (Gingy), Jessica Henson (Sugar Plum Fairy), Bill Myers (Big Bad Wolf) , Michael Litchfield (Peter Pan), Charlotte Morin (Wicked Witch), Danica Hemond (Ugly Duckling), Bre Allard (Fairy Godmother), Megan Record (Elf), Stephen (Stick Pig), Jeff Fairfield (Straw Pig), Danny Gay (Brick Pig) , Brianna Hull (White Rabbit), Maxwell Draper (Mad Hatter) and Kristin Beaulieu (Little Red Riding Hood).
“Once upon a time,” begins a brief synopsis of the popular musical, “there was a little ogre named Shrek… Thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue from a fearsome female dragon (with great teeth) and then delivers her to a “short” tempered bad guy. Throw in a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand, and his name is Shrek!”
The musical comedy is based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation motion picture film, “Shrek the Musical,” with book by William Steig. It is also a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure, featuring all new songs from Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie) and a sidesplitting book by David Lindsay-Abaire. In addition to the smash hit “I’m a Believer,” this show also features the lovely “Big, Bright Beautiful World” and the non-conformity ballad “Freak Flag.”
Shrek brings the characters you know and love from the film to life on the stage, proving that like onions and ogres, there are “layers” to every story.
