HEBRON — Krissy Waite has been interested in world affairs and journalism since her years at Tripp Middle School in Turner, and that interest as well as sharing her ideas on things environmental and political stayed with her during her three years at Hebron Academy.
“I had a great English teacher at Tripp,” the Turner resident said. “And I’ve always enjoyed writing.”
Her passion paid off. Waite is the recipient of the Gannett Foundation’s $20,000 journalism scholarship. The competitive grant has a long application that, among other qualifications, considers the student’s involvement in various school activities and financial need.
Waite was on the school newspaper staff every year at Hebron, and during her senior year, she was editor-in-chief. She takes pride in being the sitting editor when the “Hebron Review” put out its first spring edition.
The paper gave Waite opportunities to research and editorialize on a couple of her favorite subjects — food additives and global warming. She also participated in the school’s Words Program, where students are required every year to submit one writing piece for evaluation.
Waite’s senior submission, which was given as a speech during a senior graduation event, was on another of her favorite subjects — her family. Each Hebron senior is required to take the podium for this event, called “The Last Word.” Her speech, thanking her family for their support, was posted on YouTube.
Waite will be using her grant to attend Ithaca College in New York, where she will major in journalism.
