AUBURN — Former airport manager Rick Lanman and Director of Schooner Estates John Rice will be featured speakers at the Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Club in July.
Lanman will speak when the club meets from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, July 20, at the Village Inn. Rice will speak Thursday, July 27, same time and place.
The Rotary will meet under the direction of new President Monica Millhime, who was passed the torch by outgoing president, Monique Roy, at the club’s June 29 meeting.
Lanman has spent much of his life on or near airports, most recentl as the manager of a municipal airport in Arkansas. A retired Marine, Lanman has also held leadership positions at airports in Illinois and Kansas since leaving a five-year faculty position at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in Carbondale, Ill.
He is a qualified master record data safety inpsector for non-commercial airports for the Federal Aviation Administration, trained as an NOAA advanced weather spotter, and has completed the training requirements for airport security coordinator, as well as wildlife hazard manager. He is active with the Airport Cooperative Research Program, serving on multiple research panels.
Rice was a multi-level administrator in Augusta and Scarborough before he became director of operations at Schooner Estates Senior Living Community in Auburn.
His spans 17 years, with wide experiences in independent and assisted living, residential care, nursing home and skilled nursing care. As an active member of the American College of Health Care Administrators, he strives to help advance the profession of senior living health care administrators and the overall quality of life and services for seniors living in Maine.
Lunch for the meetings is available at the restaurant, 165 High St. Reservations are not required.
At the club’s June 29 meeting, members of District 7790 thanked Roy for her year of service, and welcomed Millhime as she shared her vision for the club’s next 100 years.
Millhime defined the 2017-2018 areas of focus for the club’s presence in projects assisting children and literacy, community and international connections, Humane Societies, fellowship, seniors and veterans. Millhime, along with club members, will continue the weekly program scheduling, inviting business owners, representatives from community and economic sectors, city officials and school groups as featured guest speakers.
She noted that L-A Rotary recently celebrated the 100th anniversary of the club’s charter. “Our presence in the community will continue to support fundraising events and community endeavors benefiting local scholarship and partnerships. Our goals are aligned with Rotary International as a commitment of making a difference with projects benefiting others.”
Two grants drafted by Millhime were submitted to Rotary International on behalf of Tree Street Youth Center and the SEARCH Program. The areas of service and activities kick off with in July with assistance at the Veterans Appreciation Deep Sea Fishing Tournament. In August, members will host the annual food booth at the Balloon Festival and recipes are being collected to create a community cookbook before the holidays to benefit the Autism Society. A Polio Plus event is also planned in conjunction with the Auburn-Lewiston Breakfast Club for October. Other plans are a Toys for Tots collection, a blood drive, Bowl-for-Kids Sake, a movie event for children with autism and monthly donations of requested items from the Humane Society and books for children
