MANCHESTER — The Maine Dental Association, incorporated in 1867, marked its 150th anniversary at its annual convention in Bar Harbor on June 2 and June 3.
The association’s milestone has been recognized with congratulations from the American Dental Association’s president, members of Maine’s congressional delegation and Gov. Paul LePage, who in a proclamation recognized June 3 as Maine Dental Association 150th Anniversary day in the state.
The Maine Dental Society was incorporated on Feb. 21, 1867, after Gov. Joshua Chamberlain signed the incorporation act into law. The organization’s incorporation came after its first meeting, which took place at Bowdoin College Medical Center in Brunswick on Sept. 25, 1866. Some of the topics at that first meeting included how to treat children’s teeth, filling and extracting teeth, treatment of exposed nerves, and “taking impressions for artificial teeth.”
The society’s first president was Dr. Elbridge Bacon, who practiced in Portland. The Maine Dental Society changed its name to the Maine Dental Association on June 18, 1960.
Today, the association has more than 700 members from all corners of the state.
“Throughout our state, members of the Maine Dental Association provide vital oral healthcare with expertise, commitment and compassion,” MDA Executive Director Angela Westhoff said. “We are very pleased to celebrate 150 years of dedicated service to the people of Maine.”
Headquartered in Manchester, the Maine Dental Association is a professional membership organization of licensed dentists. The Maine Dental Association exists to improve and maintain the oral and overall health of the people of Maine, serve the dentists of Maine, collectively and individually, and represent the American Dental Association at the state level.
