SKOWHEGAN — A Poland Regional High School student was the third-place recipient of a scholarship in the Margaret Chase Smith Library’s twenty-first annual essay contest.
This year Maine high school seniors were asked to write about their solutions to the current drug epidemic. Sigrid Sibley, of Poland Regional High School, won a $250 scholarship for her third-place finish.
The first-place prize of $1,000 went to Gabrielle Kyes from Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln. Second place and $500 was awarded to Abigail Hande of Highview Christian Academy in Charleston.
In addition, five honorable mention prizes of $50 were presented to Ally Clark-Bonsant and Eleanor Theriault, both of Erskine Academy in China; Sydney McDonald, of Bangor High School; Thomas Sheils, of Casco Bay High School in Portland; and Griffin Tibbitts, from Morse High School in Bath.
Funding for the essay contest and library comes from the Margaret Chase Smith Foundation, which owns the library and is operated under its auspices by the University of Maine. The library is an archive, museum, educational facility and public policy center devoted to preserving the legacy of Margaret Chase Smith, a U.S. representative and senator, promoting research into American political history, advancing the ideals of public service, and exploring issues of civic engagement.
