Norway – Norway Memorial Library Host Talk on Revolutionary War

NORWAY, ME — Norway Memorial Library will host a talk on Norway, Maine’s beginnings on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, 6:30 to 8:00 PM. Presenters Brad Cummings and Dennis Gray of Norway Historical Society will remember Norway’s early history and honor the Revolutionary War veterans whose courage and service helped shape both the country and the beginnings of the town of Norway. This talk was first given at Norway Historical Society on August 11, 2026.
Presented using maps, documents, and photographs, attendees will learn about early land grants and purchases, veterans who settled in Norway, burial sites in local cemeteries, and the origin of place names recognizable today.
This talk coincides with a glass case exhibit of early Norway artifacts on loan from the Norway Museum and Historical Society. The display includes a foot warmer, Continental currency, two flintlock pistols, a protest song about American taxation, and a powder horn. The exhibit also includes a cannonball said to be from the Battle of Bunker Hill during the siege of Boston in 1775. Learn how this war relic made its way to Norway from this first stage of the Revolutionary War. At the conclusion of the talk, attendees can hold and guess the weight of the cannonball for a chance to win a copy of the book, “Liberty is Sweet: The Hidden History of the American Revolution” by Woody Holton. The glass case display will remain on view through October.
