The River Valley Rotary Club was blessed with a surprised former Club President of 1984-1985 Larry Merrill. Larry has been away for several decades residing in the State of Arizona. Larry spoke of Rotary’s supporting a spring event back in 1982 where they had the Swift River Canoe Race. He recalled that he had a brilliant idea as one of the potential rescuers of any one tipping over their canoe that he would tie one end the rope around his waist and throw the other with end with a life saving device to a person who should happen to tip their canoe over. It so happened that canker did tip over in the rushing river right in front him! Quick thinking he threw the rope toward the person only to snag the canoe which abruptly and forcefully pulled him into the river. There is where he got the title of ‘Swan Diver.’
Larry shared other fond memories and donated his Rumford Rotary Hat with the many buttons he collected over the years to the Club.
