INDUSTRY – Root Down Market (Rt. 148 in Industry) will be holding a benefit dinner for Double B Equine Rescue on Saturday, October 4, 2025, with hopes to raise funds to cover this year’s financial shortfall. However, one benefit will not take care of the ongoing annual operation costs for Double B Equine Rescue.
The Double B Equine Rescue, founded 19 years ago, is operated by Lenny and Brenda Green and is a Maine State Licensed, 501c3 Non-Profit. They are currently caring for 25 +/- horses, mules and donkeys. With Double B’s care, these powerful human companions have a home for the rest of their natural life or until they are ready for adoption and find a forever home.
Brenda founded Double B in 2006. Until this year, she has been healthy as a horse. At 77, things caught up with her, and she is now recovering from a serious surgery. Lenny is a 75-year-old Vietnam Veteran (combat army medic) and served 27 years as a police officer. Lenny has 2 pensions and is using both to fill in the gaps to keep things running and the horses fed and cared for.
Lenny and Brenda are not spring chickens anymore. Both want the Double B to go on when they are no longer able to do all the hard work. What Lenny and Brenda bring to the table is more than hard work. They bring heart and soul and all of their personal resources to Double B.
Those are big shoes to fill.
As a community, working together, we can meet that challenge. In doing so, we will honor Lenny and Brenda’s grit and determination to do better for our fellow equine travelers on this great journey.
Due to COVID-19, Double B has experienced a severe drop in donations. Double B’s yearly budget for hay and grain alone is over $32,000. As of the end of August, Double B was about $2,700 in the hole for hay.
The annual operating budget of $75,000 does not include veterinarian calls, repairs or unexpected expenses, which are a part of life. Double B is in dire need of a horse trailer and new or used corral gates. Currently, only half of the corrals have gates, and Lenny climbs over the rest every day. Double B also needs a barn. All of the animals are housed in sheds, as well as all storage of hay and feed. Horses that are medically compromised are housed outside. Double B needs help now.
Most importantly, the goal is to help get Double B back on a firm financial footing as quickly as possible. Root Down Market is a wonderful venue, but it has limited indoor space. Sponsorship funds would help ensure that the benefit is a huge success.
There are many ways to help the Double B Equine Rescue. Lenny says it best…” Every bit helps!”
Reaching out to the community, Double B asks that you consider them for any donation from corporate sponsorships, private donations, to attendance at fundraising events or sponsorship of fundraising events. They also encourage you to visit the website: mainehorserescue.com.
All donations are tax deductible. Double B will provide a tax deduction receipt upon request.
