The featured speaker Monday, August 11, 2025 at the River Valley Rotary Club Fellowship luncheon was Eileen Pew, RSU -10 District Literacy Coach! Retired since 2018! She spoke about Literacy and said it is basically about the ability to read and write and comprehending and communicating to one another!
She has been working ever since as a Literacy Consult, helping programs such as Read Across America. Eileen has two adult children. Her oldest daughter just got married this past week end.
She worked in SAD 43, & RSU 10 for 27 years and retired in 2018 as the district literacy coach.
She said that while literacy is generally defined as the ability to read and write, it also encompasses the ability to effectively use language for communication, including speaking and listening. Furthermore, literacy can extend to specialized areas like technology, the arts, or other disciplines, often referred to as “digital literacy,” “artistic literacy,” etc. Ultimately, literacy involves the capacity to understand and express ideas, enabling individuals to participate fully in society and achieve their goals.
Eileen says, “It is never too early to start reading to the youth.” She showed herself reading to her 2 month old grandchild, reading and pointing to the words left to right while her grandchild paid close attention.
