What is Just One Day?
One of the biggest events throughout the year organized by the Sargent Family Community Fund is the “Just One Day,” (JID), event. Each year, they select one or more homes in the towns of Rangeley and Oquossoc and the Plantations of Dallas, Sandy River, Rangeley, and Coplin, to have needed renovations done at no cost to the homeowner.
On the third Wednesday of July, artisans, businesses, and others across the area volunteer one day of their time to assist with the renovations being done to the selected properties. This volunteer event is known as Just One Day (J1D).
Each year approximately 75 people donate up to 8 hours of their time laboring over various aspects of the projects. This includes things like:
This year over many people showed up at Sarges Sports Pub and Grub, as a gathering spot, to help in this effort. The house project that was selected was in desperate need of debris pick up, landscaping and sill and deck support. With all the help and support, this project is now in completion.
The history and concept of this program originated in 2010, known then as, “Friend Helping Friends,” and since then there have been 33 completed home improvement projects. In 2020 Craig Sargent, recognized how beneficial this work was for the betterment of the community and wanted to assure that the people and organizations that were so integral to the success be able to deduct their donations and keep the program alive, so Sargent formalized a legal not for profit fund called, the Sargent Family Community Fund registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, (SFCF). Craig and Sharon Sargent have personally funded the SFCF annually and with the combined genericity of contribution from donor, corporations, private and local as well as individuals, this fund has raised over 1 million dollars in donations year to date. All monies go directly to the projects and all projects are selected by others in the community. 2024 consisted of 5 renovation projects and could have not been completed if it was not for the commitment and support of the amazing local community, businesses regional and national. During JID an average of 75 volunteers show up and donate their time and labor. After that one day, additional labor and material is paid for through the fund. This concept has created a continuous loop of giving that, the hope is, will carry on well into the future as a younger generation steps up to carry the baton.
