Gardiner FCU Awards $24,000 to Local Food Pantries and Organizations
Gardiner Federal Credit Union recently had their annual Ending Hunger Check Reception, to distribute the funds they raised in 2023. The reception was held at Spectrum Generations Cohen Center, where representatives of local food pantries and organizations were in attendance. Each of the agencies invited help local families and individuals faced with food insecurities. A total of nine food pantries were distributed checks from GFCU.
The organizations are as follows: Bread of Life, Chrysalis Place, Faith Food Pantry, Food for Thought Backpack Program, Hallowell Food Pantry, Kennebec Valley Boys & Girls Club, South Gardiner Baptist Church Food Pantry, Spectrum Generations, and the Tiger Food Pantry.
When asked why the Campaign to End Hunger is important to Gardiner Federal Credit Union, Stephanie Peppard, Member Service Supervisor said “Food insecurity is extremely present in Maine, and we see a lot of it right here in Kennebec County. There are so many food pantries trying their best every day to help those in need, but prices of food keep getting higher and higher, which makes it difficult for the pantries to keep their shelves stocked. GFCU is fortunate to have the necessary resources to be able to fundraise and donate, and we can’t think of a better way to give back then to the Campaign.”
The Campaign for Ending Hunger is the Maine Credit Union League’s top fundraising focus. This past year, credit unions throughout the state of Maine raised a total of $1,221,868.94 for the campaign. This total was revealed at the Ending Hunger Results Luncheon held in February, where Gardiner Federal Credit Union was awarded first place in per member contribution. GFCU holds several fundraisers throughout the year to support the cause. The credit union would not be successful in their efforts without the support of their staff, members, and community.
Food insecurity in the state of Maine continues to be a growing concern. There are multiple ways to support the Maine Credit Union league’s efforts to end hunger. Whether that is participating in credit union fundraisers and events, donating food to local pantries yourself, or making monetary donations – everything helps, and everything counts.
