LA Arts announces, “To Lewiston, With Love” Postcard Initiative

An open call to express messages of love and support for Lewiston, Maine

LEWISTON – In response to the tragic shootings in Lewiston, ME, LA Arts has launched its “To Lewiston, With Love” postcard initiative. Developed as a way for our community to work together towards collective healing, the organization is opening the call for individuals at the local, state, and national levels to express their thoughts in the form of a postcard and send their love to Lewiston. “To Lewiston, With Love” postcards will be exhibited in the LA Arts Gallery from November 17 – January 19.

“To Lewiston, With Love” postcards can address the victims and/or their families, the immediate community of Lewiston impacted by the tragedy. With a painting, drawing, photograph, poem, or message on a postcard, people of all ages and backgrounds are asked to share their hopes and fears, remembrances and well-wishes, inspirations for a better world, and impassioned calls to action.

“Given the unthinkable tragedy our community has experienced, we needed to pivot our programming and provide an outlet for grieving and creative expression,” said LA Arts Manager and project creator, Gerald Walsh. “While additional programming in response to the tragedy is still being planned, the postcard idea is a simple and accessible way for people to show their love for our devastated city. Opening this call to the national level also acknowledges the importance of holding a conversation that transcends this specific local tragedy and creates a space for a wider spectrum of emotional responses.”

Submissions should be on a standard 3×5, 4×6, or 5×7 postcard and people are welcome to submit more than one postcard. Blank postcards and materials will be available in the LA Arts Gallery throughout the duration of the exhibit for visitor submissions. Postcards will be accepted until the end of the exhibit and then permanently archived in Maine MILL’s “One Lewiston” community archive.

Postcards can be dropped off at LA Arts during gallery hours on Tue – Thur 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. or Fri or Sat 12 p.m. – 6 p.m., or mailed to LA Arts, P.O. Box 3753, Auburn, Maine 04212.
