Martha Ballard descendants join event at Augusta Memorial site
AUGUSTA – On September 27, 2023, nearly 100 people joined the Mayor’s Committee on the Martha Ballard Memorial at an event in Mill Park in Augusta to learn more about Martha Ballard and the committee’s work to honor the historic figure. Among the attendees were three of Ballard’s descendants. Ballard, a midwife, lived along the Kennebec River in the 18th and early 19th century in what was then Hallowell, Maine. Her diary of daily life has become an important historical source.
