WINTHROP – The Bailey Library in downtown Winthrop will host Gretchen Legler and Maine State Poet Laureate Julia Bouwsma at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28.
The discussion, which is free and open to the public, is part of the ongoing Lakes Regions Forum series started by the Bailey Library in 2010.
Legler teaches Creative Writing and English at the University of Maine Farmington. She is the author of “Woodsqueer: Crafting a Sustainable Rural Life,” which was published by Trinity University Press and explores agrarian American life and the back-to-the-land movement popularized in the mid-twentieth century. Ledgler’s writing has earned two Pushcart Prizes, a Notable Essay designation in Best American Essays, and was a finalist for the Steinberg Essay Prize and the Publishing Triangle Judy Grahn Award for Lesbian Nonfiction.
Bouwsma, Maine’s sixth and current Poet Laureate, is the author of two poetry collections “Midden” and “Work by Bloodlight,” both of which received the Maine Literary Award for Poetry. Bouwsma also received the Poet’s Out Loud Prize in 2016 and the Cider Press Review Book Award in 2015. She currently serves as the Library Director for the Webster Library in Kingfield and also teaches Creative Writing at the University of Maine at Farmington.
The talk will explore living off the grid and making a life on eighty acres in backwoods Maine.
