Augusta woman named Mother of the Year

AUGUSTA – Lisa Newell, of Augusta, has been selected as the 2023 Maine Mother of the Year in the annual American Mothers Inc. program.
Newell, the mother of a son, is the 62nd woman in Maine history to hold the honor. She oversees 11 VA Medical Centers across New

England. In the community, she has served in several roles, including as the first female president of Le Club Calumet. She is lecturing knight at the Augusta Elk’s Lodge 964, and was on the Maine House Committee and chair of the Maine Children’s Cancer Program. She serves on the Board of the Directors at Howell House, a senior residents, in Augusta, as the treasurer.
Newell graduated from Cony High School and is pursuing a logistics leadership certification through Penn State University. She enjoys spending time with her son and his family, and also delights in gardening, crafting, reading and music.
She will join honorees from states across the United States, will be recognized during the 88th National Convention of American Mothers Inc. in April. Since 1935, American Mothers Inc. has searched for and selected the Mother of the Year in every state, district and territory in the country.
“The hard work and inspiration of mothers are being recognized now more than ever,” said Joyce Stevens, president of American Mothers Inc. “It’s an honor to be part of an organization that’s connecting moms across the nation to celebrate motherhood and uplift their stories of resiliency and strength.”
